Haiti Earthquake & the HAARP Induction Magnetometer

Haiti Earthquake & the HAARP (High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program) Induction Magnetometer – you will now see 3 images based on a time-frequency spectrogram, which shows the frequency content of signals recorded by the HAARP Induction Magnetometer. This instrument, provided by the University of Tokyo, measures temporal variations in the geomagnetic field in the ULF (ultra-low frequency) range of 0-5 Hz. The spectrogram images are produced by computing the PSD (power spectral density) of successive 102.4-second segments of timeseries data, and plotting these spectra as color/intensity slices along a 24-hour scale. Audio files are created by converting the raw 10 Hz sampled waveform (Bx channel) to a wav file at 44.1 kHz (resulting in a playback speedup of 4410 times), and then compressing the 1.7MB wav file to a 150KB mp3 file.

The 2010 Haiti earthquake was a catastrophic magnitude 7.0 Mw earthquake. Its epicentre was near Léogâne, approximately 25 km (16 miles) west of Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti. The earthquake occurred at 16:53:10 local time (21:53:10 UTC) on Tuesday, 12 January 2010,[4][5] at a depth of 13 km (8.1 miles). The United States Geological Survey recorded a series of at least 33 aftershocks, fourteen of them between magnitudes 5.0 and 5.9.

Tectonic Summary

The January 12, 2010, Haiti earthquake occurred in the boundary region separating the Caribbean plate and the North America plate. This plate boundary is dominated by left-lateral strike slip motion and compression, and accommodates about 20 mm/y slip, with the Caribbean plate moving eastward with respect to the North America plate.

Haiti occupies the western part of the island of Hispaniola, one of the Greater Antilles islands, situated between Puerto Rico and Cuba. At the longitude of the January 12 earthquake, motion between the Caribbean and North American plates is partitioned between two major east-west trending, strike-slip fault systems — the Septentrional fault system in northern Haiti and the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden fault system in southern Haiti.

The location and focal mechanism of the earthquake are consistent with the event having occurred as left-lateral strike slip faulting on the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden fault system. This fault system accommodates about 7 mm/y, nearly half the overall motion between the Caribbean plate and North America plate.

The Enriquillo-Plantain Garden fault system has not produced a major earthquake in recent decades. The EPGFZ is the likely source of historical large earthquakes in 1860, 1770, 1761, 1751, 1684, 1673, and 1618, though none of these has been confirmed in the field as associated with this fault.

IDF Aid Crew Loads Cargo Plane for Haiti, 15 Jan 2010

In the early hours of Friday 15 Jan 2010, IDF crew loaded an El Al cargo plane with supplies and equipment for the aid mission to Haiti. The IDF delegation is setting up the largest field hospital in Port-au-Prince in order to provide disaster relief. The delegation consists of 220 Home Front Command search and rescue teams and Medical Corps medical teams personnel, and will be able to treat up to 500 patients a day.

TodaysNetworkNews: HAITI: SEISMIC EARTHQUAKE ASSESSMENT: MORE QUAKES in FUTURE (U.N. MINUSTAH)

TodaysNetworkNews: 16 February 2010 – UN MINUSTAH, Port-au-Prince, Haiti – A UN report compiled by a group of thirty scientists assessing the risk of earthquakes, landslides and tsunamis in Haiti says there is a high probability of another earthquake of at least the same magnitude within the next 100 years.

The findings of the report which is expected to be released next Friday will be a crucial factor to be taken into account before a rebuilding effort begins.

I am afraid of working here, but I dont have a choice. If I stay at home nobody is going to give me anything.

According to the United Nations, if 1.2 million people are currently living in shelters, there are at least 2 million additional people affected by the earthquake and threatened by falling rubble.

Andrew Morton of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), responsible for the report, warned that every damaged building which has not yet collapsed will probably do so, with people who have returned to cracked houses in their homes or work buildings facing a great danger.

Its very dangerous to talk about predictions of earthquake. But in summary the best signs show that there is reasonable likelihood that we will have a big earthquake within the next ten, fifty, one hundred years. Now the important thing about that number is within the lifetime of the buildings that we will go up now and the ones that still exist. So the buildings need to be prepared for that earthquake.

A team of experts from across the world are currently installing instruments to analyze the shifts of the earth. The French geologist Eric Calais has already been placing GPS to measure the effects of the fracture.

In fact its the entire country which was affected by the earthquake, even though the major shakes are in the zone of Port au Prince to Leogane. We are trying to measure these shakes with GPS.

The Haitian fracture has already been the subject of long studies by Haitian experts. Roberte Bien Aimee, a professor of seismology at the University of Port au Prince, had already done a thesis on the Haitian fracture as a student.

An earthquake of this magnitude 7.3 it was the first time. Even if it were magnitude 5, it would have been the first time. We had already felt small shakes before. So this was a sign announcing a major earthquake. But there we were not ready.

Another report undertaking urgent data collection to enable a more informed analysis and forecast will be delivered at end of March. The outputs of the taskforce will be made available to the public on a dedicated website.
