Hurricane Gustav – Morgan City, LA – September 1, 2008
Hurricane Gustav ravaged portions of the Caribbean in late August 2008, resulting in deadly flooding over Haiti and then crossing western Cuba on the 30th as a strong Category Four, with 150 mph winds.
A day after emerging into the southeastern Gulf of Mexico, Gustav leveled off as a Category Three. The hurricane remained at that intensity as it approached the coast of Southern Louisiana, prompting the largest evacuation in the state’s history on fears of another Katrina-type disaster.
Throughout the evening of August 31st, drier air began to work its way into the system and Gustav responded by weakening slightly to Category Two intensity.
Just prior to, and during, landfall Gustav began a trend of increasing organization with intense convection developing within the northwest and western eyewall. The hurricane made landfall near Cocodrie, Louisiana on September 1st at 14:30UTC with sustained winds of 110mph and a central pressure of 955mb.
Storm chasers Michael Laca, Jim Leonard and Max Hagen, as well as filmmaker Chris Terrill, intercepted Hurricane Gustav in Morgan City, Louisiana. Our chase team recorded a minimum pressure of 957.3mb at 17:26UTC and estimated peak winds at our location between 80-100mph. An unofficial observation of 103mph was reported by another chase team in Morgan City. Official wind readings include 86mph at Grand Isle; 82mph at Amerda Pass; 75mph at New Iberia; and 91mph at Baton Rouge.
After intercepting Gustav’s eyewall and eye in Morgan City, our chase team repositioned ourselves to the northwest and intercepted the northwestern eyewall a second time between Franklin and New Iberia. During this second eyewall intercept, we encountered exceptionally heavy rainfall that made driving conditions extremely hazardous.
After Gustav’s eyewall moved on, we once again repositioned ourselves to the northwest in Lafayette, Louisiana and intercepted Gustav’s core a third time. Though weakening, the storm still produced intense winds, driving rains and significant damage well inland.

Hurricane Gloria 1985 – Weather Channel – PART #1 of 5 -
PART 1
Hurricane Gloria hit Long Island, New York on September 27th 1985 at approximately 9am. This was the last Hurricane to directly hit our area, it is now 2007 and 22 years since Gloria, we are long overdue for another like this or greater. This i recorded back in 1985 from the Weather Channel not only the Hurricane hitting Long Island, but broadcasts from weeks before when Glori was nothing but a mass of Thundershowers moving off the African Coast, to the Bildup to a Catergory 5 in the Carribean, to Tropical Storm Henri that hit Long Island 2 days prior to Gloria, to The uncertain landfall of Gloria, to the power going out on my VCR as i lost electricity with the Hurricane over Islip.
The total clip is 40 minutes, i had to break this up into 5 parts to fit, this is part #1.. This will show you where a Long Island bound Hurricane can form & the perfect track this Storm took.. Lucky for Long Island, it struck at a dead low tide & skirting the Outer Banks of North Carolina had helped to diminish the punch that it once had. It is amazing to think that this was 22 years ago & even more amazing that there has been nothing since that was direct. Albeit nothing like the “Long Island Express” of 1938, Hurricane Gloria was a borderline Catergory 2 upon landfal in Seaford, Long Island where the eye passed over.

Quake hits Papua New Guinea
Earthquakes strike US, Papua New Guinea, Kuril Islands, and Chile. Early on Wednesday, August 4, a magnitude-6.4 tremor shook the Aleutian Islands off the coast of Alaska, USA. On Thursday morning, a powerful 7.0-magnitude temblor rocked the New Britain region of Papua New Guinea. Centered in a remote mountainous region 145 kilometers east of Kandrian, the quake caused panic among island residents. Soon after, another strong quake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale occurred east of the Kuril Islands, 423 kilometers northeast of Kurilsk. In Chile also on Thursday, three underwater earthquakes of magnitudes 5.7, 5.2, and 4.7, respectively, triggered alarm among locals of the Biobío Region as they struck between 15 and 40 kilometers northeast of Lebu City, resulting in temporary power loss for some 20,000 people. However, there were fortunately no injuries or significant damage reported from this or the other earth-shaking events.
While we are grateful for the safety of all the residents, we pray that such disruptions may quickly be curbed as we join in gentler, eco-stabilizing actions.

Earthquake hits Quebec-Ontario region
Earthquakes jolt Canada, India, Papua New Guinea and Chile. Emergency measures were implemented in Canada’s Ontario-Quebec regions after the largest quake since 1935 to ever shake the area occurred on Wednesday afternoon, June 23. Measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale and centered 38 kilometers north of Cumberland, Ontario, the temblor caused damage in some Canadian locations while it was felt in US areas as distant as New York City and Cleveland, Ohio where people were evacuated from downtown buildings. On Thursday and Friday, India’s Nicobar Islands were rumbled by three quakes, all approximately 150 kilometers southwest of Mohean, measuring 5.4, 5.0 and 5.1 on the Richter scale, respectively. A powerful 6.1-magnitude temblor also struck on Thursday off the coast of Papua New Guinea, 110 kilometers southwest of Kimbe in West New Britain province, while across the globe in Chile, a 5.3-magnitude quake was recorded in the Tarapacá region the same day. There were fortunately no reports of casualties or tsunamis for any of the quakes.
We are grateful for the safety of the many quake-affected residents as we also pray for the calming of such disruptions through humanity’s more caring and Earth-stabilizing ways.
