Strong earthquake hits Mexico
The governor of the Mexican state of Baja California said Monday he is asking the federal government for a natural disaster declaration after a 7.2-magnitude earthquake shook the region. The border city of Mexicali, the capital of Baja California, was the hardest hit by Sunday’s quake. Two people have died, and 233 injured. Doctors in Mexicali told CNN that between five and 10 people were in critical condition. On Monday, authorities examined the damage in Mexicali. Electricity was restored in some parts of the city, and most structures were standing, though the cleanup appeared to be daunting. Glass and other debris were strewn around the city. Mexican President Felipe Calderon traveled to Mexicali on Monday to examine the damage first-hand. Unlike the recent earthquakes in Haiti and Chile, there were no reports of people trapped underneath rubble.

7.7 earthquake strikes Sumatra, Indonesia, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (3)
Indonesias Sumatra Island shook by 7.7 magnitude earthquake, which occurred on early Wednesday. It triggered a small Tsunami, snapped power lines and made the people search for higher ground. There were no reports of major injuries, but minor damages in some areas.
Abdul Karim, a government spokesman said more than a dozen of houses collapsed or damaged in Teupah Salatan village. We are still collecting reports of damages and injuries but the situation has returned to normal and people are going back home, he said.
Rumors about a tsunami panicked villagers living near the beach, said Eddy Effendi, a resident on Nias island. They ran away on motorbikes and cars or by climbing the hills. There was panic and chaos everywhere, but I dont see serious damage or injuries in my village.
In 2004 tsunami triggered by a 9.2 magnitude earthquake in the same part of Indonesia killed so many people in many countries on the Indian Ocean basin.

Non-Discrimination in disaster response (2007 Tabasco floods)
This film chronicles the relief efforts of the Mexican Red Cross following the floods in Tabasco, Mexico in October of 2007 when over 1 million people were left homeless.
Vulnerable groups such as the elderly and disabled are often neglected after disasters and are therefore, doubly affected.
The film highlights the importance of prioritizing these often invisible groups and recognizing the important contribution that they can make in preparing for and responding to disasters.
