How many of you think that natural disasters are caused by God?
Does God create natural disasters to punish the wicked, is it the devil, or are they just a normal part of life on this planet?
Man plays a great role in disasters.
The common view of ‘natural disasters’ is due for a radical change,” says the recent report Natural Disasters, Acts of God or Acts of Man? “Though triggered by natural events such as floods and earthquakes, disasters are increasingly man-made.” Floods, droughts, and famines, the report points out, are more often caused by “environmental and resource mismanagement” than by excessive or inadequate rainfall. Other disasters, such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and hurricanes, are “magnified by unwise human actions.” Traditional relief measures are cited as often being useless or making matters worse. Says the study: “Today humans are playing too large a role in natural disasters for us to go on calling them ‘natural.’

Earthquakes rattle Iran, New Zealand, Fiji, Vanuatu and Chile. On Tuesday, September 7 a 5.3-magnitude temblor occurred in the southern Iranian province of Hormozg?n, its epicenter located167 kilometers west of the port city of Bandar-Abbas at a depth of 28 kilometers. Also on Tuesday, a 5.2-magnitude temblor jolted New Zealand’s North Island 75 kilometers southwest of Napier, while elsewhere in the nation, violent aftershocks continued to rattle Christchurch following the major 7.1-magnitude quake on Saturday. Two aftershocks measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale on Tuesday prompted officials to temporarily evacuate 70 people to a local high school, while a 5.1-magnitude tremor on Wednesday caused several already-weakened buildings to collapse along with power outages as frightened people fled into the streets. Meanwhile, the Fiji Region was also shaken on Wednesday by a shallow 6.3-magnitude earthquake centered just 10 kilometers deep and 155 kilometers northeast of Lambasa. That evening, Vanuatu experienced a 6.2-magnitude temblor centered 142 kilometers southeast of Isangel. Chile’s Biobío region was also jolted by a strong earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale early on Thursday morning as it struck offshore 35 kilometers southwest of Concepción at a depth of 17 kilometers. There were fortunately no injuries or casualties reported for any of these events.
We are thankful for the general safety of those in the quake-hit regions as we pray that such potential disasters subside through our striving for greater consideration of all life.
