Chile EQ Video

The magnitude 8.8 Chilean earthquake of February 27, 2010 is one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded. This earthquake occurred in a very seismically active region off the coast of central Chile. Hundreds of thousands of lives were impacted by the event and the accompanying tsunami caused more widespread damage than the earthquake. Although many cities in Chile suffered severe damage, the existence of modern building codes resulted in the limited loss of life and property. Many lessons can be learned from the recent events in Chile.

Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future and a guest scholar at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis, discuss disasters in light of the recent earthquakes in Haiti and Chile. Issues brought up include viewing disasters as a question of economic development, environmental protection and social justice, disaster management and planning, the role of media in reporting disasters, and the need to make use of local knowledge.

Hosted by the Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future on March 30, 2010.

United Nations studies project that the Arctic may be free of ice in summertime by 2080. The polar passage, clogged by ice throughout seafaring history, may come to challenge the Panama and Suez canals.

Instead you have to look at long-term trends. These show that Arctic summer sea ice is decreasing by 232,000 square miles a decade, nearly 2.5 times the area of Great Britain.

On current trends it will still become ice-free in summer by around 2060.
