By what process are soldiers transferred to peacekeeping or disaster relief forces such as the UN?

I’m aware these roles are performed by troops from many different nations, but mainly in terms of the British Army, and especially in terms of soldiers specialising in engineering roles: How are they transferred to peace keeping or disaster relief missions? Do they request it or are they selected? What roles do they usually perform during and after conflicts, earthquakes, floods etc. And finally how long can these transfers last?
i know i mentioned the UN, but i didn’t meant to limit it to that, it was more an Engineers specific question, what roles they play and whether they can volunteer

The UN devises a plan for a relief or peacekeeping operation and ask member nations to provide support….each member nation commits an "X" amount of troops and resources to support the operation….and that countries military tasks available units to support their countries commitment…simple as that…

Engineers can do a variety of things like building/repairing roads. delivering supplies, search and rescue, constructing shelters, removing debris, providing electricity, etc…

The UN, and most relief agencies, don;t have their own forces…they are the coordinators. You can;volunteer to deploy with a non existent force unless your country provides forces for you to go with….

How can I get a job with FEMA or any other job dealing with Natural Disasters?

I want a job that deals with natural disasters, and helping people. Whats the best path to this. Currently I am in my second year of college, have a 3.2 gpa and still undecided as a major. My interests include nature, natural disasters, traveling. Thanks for the help!

Did you just recently become interested in helping people? I ask because people who really want a career in helping others would research the various jobs & organizations that deal with this. The first step is to check out a few websites… I’m sure being in college & all you can figure out a few agencies and do the research on how to get a job or volunteer with them. Since this is not obvious to you, I did my own search and found out how to get FEMA employment info: http://training.fema.gov/contactus/ . I’m sure if you’re so dedicated you can find out additional info for the other agencies.

Now, I realize that if you don’t live near a coastline, you are not going to be having to worry about hurricanes. But in 1969, when Hurricane Camille hit the coast of Mississippi. She then headed north and tore up a bunch of states that normally don’t get much action from hurricanes.
