We prevent plagues with sanitation and vaccination. We prevent damage and death from earthquakes (such as Haiti) by designing and building structures to with stand them. Same for hurricanes. We are very good at predicting hurricanes and ordering evacuations. If it happens to help save the planet it`s obviously a good thing. But no one can foresee or guarantee that technology will always help. It isn`t magic. It can destroy the world, as well as help it.
