Seismic activity hasn't really increased, just media attention to the ones that have done significant destruction. Fewer people died in Chile because the building codes are stricter than Haiti (made of brick rather than straw), even though the Chilean quake was stronger. Quakes happen weekly/daily, anywhere in the world based on tectonic plate activity and how the two landmasses shift.
