Haiti Earthquakes

Are the earthquakes in Haiti and Chile a premonition for the end of the world in 2012?

Does anyone else think that its kind of weird that we are having lots of tsunamis and earthquakes in the past 10 years? including in New Orleans etc

Earthquakes of the magnitude of those in Chile and Haiti happen on average two or three times every year. Forty years ago there were several in one year and one of them ended the "Cultural Revolution" in China because the crazies who were running China got kicked out since they were incapable of fixing things.

Just what supposed effect from the things predicted for 2012 are causing these earthquakes more than two years early? What is the physical connection?

The reality is that Chile, Haiti, California, Japan, New Zealand etc sit near boundaries of tectonic plates. This is where big earthquakes happen, they have in the past and they will in the future.

There is no factual evidence of doom anytime in 2012. Everything these people say, and I really do mean everything is wrong or a deliberate lie. These stories exist to make money from selling books of superstition and pseudo-science, and by the by, sell useless "survival goods". Or to promote some dubious personal ideas, such as founding religious cults.

There is no Mayan prophecy. They had a count of days which runs by "baktuns" and a baktun is 144,000 days. Their 13th baktun will reach 144,000 and the count will start at 1 on the 14th baktun the next day. The only inscription that may be associated with this is damaged but says that something will descend into something else. They also say that one of their kings will be remembered in 4772 by our count, so they did not expect an end of the world.

There is no planet X or Nibiru, if these were due in 2012 they would already be visible without needing a big telescope. If the fakes can take blurry photographs of it with standard cameras, why can’t we see the thing with binoculars or a $500 telescope from a hobby shop? Why can’t thousands of amateur astronomers on every continent see it?

The planets cannot and will not line up and it would not matter if they did. The orbits of the planets are tilted slightly in relation to each other so it can’t happen. Every few dozen years the five visible planets will almost form up in a line and be visible in a small patch of the sky. Nothing happens. This will not happen in 2012, the next time will be in September 2040. The frauds and woo-woos will be out for that. Remember, you saw it here first.

There are several different versions of the lies about the galactic line up. only one is nearly true and it happens every year around 18 December. it’s about 6 degrees out and was closest in 1998. What happened? Nothing.

Big solar flares are not expected. Solar activity is expected to peak in March-April 2013 but it could be earlier or later. The Sun is not entirely predictable but it does have a cycle that runs about 11 years. Solar flares do not reach the Earth, but they do affect us. So called solar storms can affect power transmission here, mainly if the power grids are under strain already. Power companies are aware of this and design their equipment to minimise trouble. So do the operators of communications satellites and telephone systems.

The geographic poles cannot reverse since they are stabilised by the Moon’s gravity. The amount of force needed to move them would destroy the planet. There is no known source of such a force.

Magnetic pole reversals take thousands of years to happen and before they start, the Earth’s magnetic field gets a lot weaker. It is getting weaker at the moment, but it is still far stronger than it has been before previous reversals. The Earth’s magnetic field is also much stronger than that of the Sun and far, far stronger than that of the galaxy so anything magnetic that happens in the galaxy or the Sun does not affect the Earth.

Just days after the devastating earthquake, another strong earthquake hit Haiti on Wednesday morning (4:33 pm IST), sending panic-stricken people running helter-skelter.The earthquake was of 6.1 magnitude, according to the US Geological Survey, and hit about 56 kilometres northwest of the capital of Port-au-Prince, at a depth of 22 kilometres. The damages caused by the earthquake has not been ascertained as yet, even as Haiti continues to come to terms with the damages and loss caused by the earthquake that struck the country eight days ago, on 12th January. There was no immediate reports of damage from the quake, which struck after daybreak. Haitian officials say the death toll from the January 12 magnitude 7 quake was likely to be between 100,000 and 200,000. Fearing new damage from aftershocks, thousands of people have been sleeping in streets in the capital Port-au-Prince since then. http://seowebvideo.com

7.0 earthquake hits Haiti Serious loss of life expected

A major earthquake struck southern Haiti on Tuesday, knocking down buildings and power lines and inflicting what its ambassador to the United States called a catastrophe for the Western Hemisphere’s poorest nation.

Several eyewitnesses reported heavy damage and bodies in the streets of the capital, Port-au-Prince, where concrete-block homes line steep hillsides. There was no estimate of the dead and wounded Tuesday evening, but the U.S. State Department has been told to expect serious loss of life department spokesman P.J. Crowley told reporters in Washington.

The only thing I can do now is pray and hope for the best the ambassador, Raymond Alcide Joseph
The magnitude 7.0 quake — the most powerful to hit Haiti in a century — struck shortly before 5 p.m. and was centered about 10 miles (15 kilometers) southwest of Port-au-Prince, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. It could be felt strongly in eastern Cuba, more than 200 miles away, witnesses said.

Experts warned of earthquake risk on Haiti

Mike Godfrey, an American contractor working for the U.S. Agency for International Development, said “a huge plume of dust and smoke rose up over the city” within minutes of the quake — “a blanket that completely covered the city and obscured it for about 20 minutes.”

Witnesses reported damaged buildings throughout the capital, including the president’s residence and century-old homes nearby, and The Associated Press reported that a hospital collapsed. President Rene Preval is safe, Joseph said, but there was no estimate of the dead and wounded Tuesday evening.

He said an official of his government told him houses had crumbled “on the right side of the street and the left side of the street.”

“He said it is a catastrophe of major proportions,” Joseph said.

Impact Your World: How you can help

Frank Williams, the Haitian director of the relief agency World Vision International, said the quake left people “pretty much screaming” all around Port-au-Prince. He said the agency’s building shook for about 35 seconds, “and portions of things on the building fell off.”

“None of our staff were injured, but lots of walls are falling down,” Williams said. “Many of our staff have tried to leave, but were unsuccessful because the walls from buildings and private residences are falling into the streets, so that it has pretty much blocked significantly most of the traffic.”

Haiti’s government is backed by a U.N. peacekeeping mission established after the ouster of former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide in 2004.

The headquarters of the U.N. peacekeeping mission in Port-au-Prince collapsed, a U.N. official told CNN.

There was no immediate report of any dead or wounded from the building, but Alain Le Roy, the undersecretary-general for peacekeeping operations said of the 9,000-member, Brazilian led-force, “For the moment, a large number of personnel remain unaccounted for.”

Outside the capital, several people were hurt when they rushed to get out of a school in the southwestern city of Les Cayes, said the Rev. Kesner Ajax, the school’s executive director. Two homes in the area collapsed and the top of a church collapsed in a nearby town, he said, but he did not know of any fatalities.
Les Cayes, a city of about 400,000 people, is about 140 miles (225 kilometers) southwest of Port-au-Prince.

The quake took place about 6 miles (10 kilometers) underground, according to the USGS — a depth that can produce severe shaking. At least 10 aftershocks followed, including two in the magnitude 5 range, the USGS reported.
Jean Bernard, an eyewitness in Port-au-Prince, told CNN the city had no electricity Tuesday evening. The first quake lasted 35 to 40 seconds, he said.

“A lot of houses [and] buildings went down, and people are still running all over the streets,” Bernard said. “People are looking for their wives, looking for their husbands and their kids. It’s scary.”

Luke Renner, an American staying in Cap-Hatien, a city nearly 100 miles north of Port-au-Prince, said he was sitting at his home when “the whole world started to shake.”

“It felt like our whole house was balancing on a beach ball,” Renner said. “We heard the whole community screaming and in an uproar during that whole 20- to 30-second window.”

“I haven’t seen any structural damage here,” Renner continued. “With the sun setting it may be difficult to tell. In the morning we’ll know for sure.”

Because of the earthquake’s proximity to the capital, and because the city is densely populated and has poorly constructed housing, “it could cause significant casualties,” said Jian Lin, a senior geologist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts.

lots of earthquakes have been happening lately, is the globe becoming more active?

i have noticed that lately we have gotten the haiti earthquake, the chile earthquake, the china one, and not an earthquake but the big iceland volcano just blew. Is it common to get this much activity? and correct me if i missed any earthquakes.

Not really. There are hundreds of thousands of earthquakes around the world every year. Now, many of them cannot be felt, but there are tens of thousands (maybe more) that can be felt, and there are probably only ten to twenty 7.0+ earthquakes in any given year. So far in 2010 we have had a handful of big quakes that are putting us above average for the year, but the trend may not continue. Even if it does, at the current rate, we are not dramatically above average for strong earthquakes.

As for volcanic eruptions, we usually have 50-60 of those per year. About half are non-explosive flows, but 20-30 are explosive eruptions. While I don’t actually know, I am pretty certain we are not above average in this department either.

With huge simplifications, here are some things to keep in mind:

1. These things happen more than most of us know. We just happen to be hearing about them recently because they have coincidentally occurred in places in which they effect great numbers of people.

2. It simply isn’t accurate to measure the frequency of these things in a short span of time. If there were two massive earthquakes in one week, it would make no sense to assume there will be 102 more for the year. A few months is simply too short of a span of time, unless of course we were actually having massive earthquakes on a weekly/daily basis.

3. Earthquakes, other earthquakes, and eruptions often go hand in hand. This is related to the last point because it basically says that for a period of time, there are likely to be dramatic increases in activity, but it doesn’t really last. These things may trigger one another, or they may both have the same underlying cause that we are not seeing. Eventually things settle down though (by the way, this is not to say that any of the earthquakes that have gotten a lot of coverage have necessarily had anything to do with one another or with the volcano in Iceland).

4. The earth is under constant activity, and while we may see varying degrees of frequency and magnitude from time to time, the earth ultimately has a pretty stable system. As odd as it may seem, and despite what we may personally experience, the reality is that without outside interference, the activity you are asking about is more likely to slow down (over a crazy amount of time though).

How many earthquakes hit haiti?

I mean after the huge one about a week or 2 ago. I know a total of 3 but were there more?

There have been many more than three. Three was the main 7.0 Richter shock, and numerous aftershocks, from 4.1 to 6.1 (I think that there was one higher, but not sure), last I heard was 52 of the large ones, hundreds below 4.0. The 2.0 Richter magnitude is the threshold at which humans can sense the ground motion.

It’s the enormous number and relatively strong number of earthquakes that hampered rescue efforts – the rubble kept shifting.

Why aren’t buildings in Haiti designed to resist earthquakes?

If the region is so prone to powerful earthquakes, then why weren’t buildings designed to resist the effects of a catastrophic earthquake? Clearly, that would be cheaper and safer than having 200,000 people die, anarchy in the streets, and people with nowhere to go. Does anyone know if the new buildings will be designed to withstand the full force of a natural disaster? Part of the problem now is that the Haitian government did not have strong building codes.
Yes, I know it’s a poor country. But they will eventually rebuild. It would be cheaper for other countries to lend Haiti money for earthquake proof infrastructure instead of having to bail it out each time a disaster strikes.

Many good answers above. Third world poor, corrupt countries that have 99% poverty where people never work, seek education and stay drunk.100% of the time don’t see the need to build anything more than a cardboard shack.

The sad thing is the US will make them all citizens and we will have a few more million illegals in this country causing problems and their kids…..future criminals.
