Why aren’t buildings in Haiti designed to resist earthquakes?

If the region is so prone to powerful earthquakes, then why weren’t buildings designed to resist the effects of a catastrophic earthquake? Clearly, that would be cheaper and safer than having 200,000 people die, anarchy in the streets, and people with nowhere to go. Does anyone know if the new buildings will be designed to withstand the full force of a natural disaster? Part of the problem now is that the Haitian government did not have strong building codes.
Yes, I know it’s a poor country. But they will eventually rebuild. It would be cheaper for other countries to lend Haiti money for earthquake proof infrastructure instead of having to bail it out each time a disaster strikes.

Many good answers above. Third world poor, corrupt countries that have 99% poverty where people never work, seek education and stay drunk.100% of the time don’t see the need to build anything more than a cardboard shack.

The sad thing is the US will make them all citizens and we will have a few more million illegals in this country causing problems and their kids…..future criminals.

Why did the Haiti earthquake cause more deaths that the Chile earthquake?

The Chile earthquake was far more powerful.

Chile is a developed country that has earthquake proof buildings. And Haiti is a 3rd world country that has no money and can’t buy earthquake proofing.

Could I join the Red Cross and go overseas? For disaster relief?

I want to go overseas, somewhere like Africa, where I can help. I’m only 19 years old,I don’t have any training, but if I joined the Red Cross, would there be any way they could send me overseas to help out?
I know it would humble me to go somewhere third world,it would satisfy my need to travel and my want to help more people.
Are you guys mocking me?I’m serious,I want to do this.

The Red Cross is not what it use to be . They are more about money than the charity work now . There are other companies that go over seas and do good works it is just a matter of finding who will take you and keep you out of harms way.

Global Warming Graphs – The Link Between the Ice Caps and the Sea Level

During the last decade global warming has been an item  of debate despite the fact that, the one thing that has been decided is that the planet is warming up. The reasonable definition is actually one which tells you that greenhouse gasses are usually the cause of the warming of the earth. Typically the debate continues as to the cause of about global warming and in what way can it eventually affect the planet earth. There has even been some controversy  whether global warming exists. There is no controversy regarding the increase in the planet earth’s temperature as is has risen, during the past 100 years, from ,45 -.06 degrees Celsius.

The debate is  caused by those that believe and the ones that happen to be skeptical. The ones that consider feel that greenhouse gasses like co2 in the environment acts like a shield trapping heat inside the environment. Temperature rises when carbon dioxide increases in the atmosphere See chart.

Arise in the planet’s temperature will cause the ice caps to melt and the sea levels to increase. Our planet’s shoreline may wash away and there is anxiety when disease to human life and creatures.

The ones that don’t believe, think that global warming causes is no problem to the atmosphere knowning that the increase in earth’s temperature is not alarming. The planet’s coastline is not going to disappear and neither may the ice caps.

This particular graph indicates the fact that there were temperature rises within the mid of the twentieth century before the spread of carbon dioxide. The chart definitely shows the temperature fluctuations over time.

Arguments whether global warming prevails or doesn’t exist have been many. The believers in global warming have felt they’ve proved its existence using computer climate models. The non believers suggest that these designs are certainly not based in actual fact and therefore are therefore not reliable proof.

And so the arguments continue; with one faction stating that global warmng is one thing you should be alarmed about and it is a concern that mustn’t be taken casually, and also the other faction telling the fact that greenhouse effect is a normal phenomenon and that there’s no reason to get alarm.

The Coming Apocalypse 2010, Part 1

There have been numerous deadly Earthquakes over the last 10 years such as: the Earthquake in Bam, Iran, which killed 30.000 people and destroyed that city; The Earthquake, which caused the devastating 2004 Boxing day Tsunami that killed approximately 230.000 people and had a very heavy death toll on coastlines in the Indian ocean; The powerful 2005 Pakistan Earthquake, which killed approximately 82.000 people and destroyed that city and even killed people in other countries; The 2008 Sichuan Earthquake, which destroyed that whole region and killed over 80.000 people; The Earthquake in Haiti, which took over 230.000 lives and utterly destroyed that capital; The super-quake in Chile that literally “shortened the day”; The Earthquake in Baja California (April 04) and China (April 13), which claimed over 2.200 lives. Several strong quakes these past months have struck the Indonesian region, one quake measuring 7.8 (April 06) and another 7.2 (May 09) in magnitude. 23 earthquakes this year have been measuring 6.5 or greater in magnitude as of July 08 2010. USGS’ lists a total of 38 significant earthquakes for 2010, and we have over 5 months left to go! There’s no doubt at all that there will be many more Deadly Earthquakes to come in the very near future!

Exactly What Are We Doing Here And Why?

Wherever do we come from? What are we? Where are we going?

Therefore asks the title of one of Paul Gaugin’s most famous paintings, depicting tropical nudes in the daily tasks of picking fruit, gossiping, worrying, sleeping, and worship. Gaugin’s individual intentions were to show the three broad stages of living as birth, young adulthood, and old age. The questions come from a personal catechism of his former teacher at Catholic school designed to lead young boys towards a consideration with the spiritual life.

For the existentialist, these are the only questions in lifetime, the only real puzzles that each man and woman need to solve for him and herself, on his or her very own. Such questions cannot be answered by science, or religion, or anyone else other than every person within the context of his or her own personal life – as lived, moment to moment and from year to year.

What are we? What are human beings? What does it mean being a man or a woman?

Wherever do we come from? How did we get here? And where are we going to go now?

These concerns are deeply evocative of our childhood fears and fantasies, despite their very serious very adult themes. They point to a yearning, yet a mature mind also understands that the yearning is illusory. For the desire to know can in itself be ignorance insofar as it presupposes there to be an answer to the unanswerable. Thus Goethe cautions us against ascribing design to the accidental and chance to design – which advice finds applications throughout several fields, including when we consider that social inequality may possibly be engineered rather than entirely natural.

In the end, nevertheless, we must agree with Voltaire’s Candide, who, in the manner of Solomon in the Book of Ecclesiastes, notes that one’s only duty is to tend to one’s garden – to work, and put all one’s energies towards work: Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your heart. Whatever other purpose there is to everyday living, this much is clear: Work.

New Year's Eve 2008 Hurricanes Game

For New Year's Eve, we took the kids to a Carolina Hurricanes game (vs. the Atlanta Thrashers). It also gave me a chance to play with one of the new toys that we got for Christmas, a Kodak Zi6 pocket-sized High Definition camcorder. Here's a little video from our evening out.
