http://seowebvideo.com/naturaldisastervideos HAITI HIT BY SECOND EARTHQUAKE NEWS Just days after the devastating earthquake, another strong earthquake hit Haiti on Wednesday morning (4:33 pm IST), sending panic-stricken people running helter-skelter.The earthquake was of 6.1 magnitude, according to the US Geological Survey, and hit about 56 kilometres northwest of the capital of Port-au-Prince, at a depth of 22 kilometres. The damages caused by the earthquake has not been ascertained as yet, even as Haiti continues to come to terms with the damages and loss caused by the earthquake that struck the country eight days ago, on 12th January.There was no immediate reports of damage from the quake, which struck after daybreak. Haitian officials say the death toll from the January 12 magnitude 7 quake was likely to be between 100,000 and 200,000. Fearing new damage from aftershocks, thousands of people have been sleeping in streets in the capital Port-au-Prince since then. http://seowebvideo.com/naturaldisastervideos

6.2 Earthquake in Northern Chile 25 mar 2010

A strong earthquake struck the Atacama Region in Chile at 11:52 (14:52 UTC), provoking widespread hysteria. The United States Geological Survey reported that the tremor reached a magnitude of 6.2. The epicentre is located on the mainland 76 kilometers south of Copiapó and at a depth of 59 kilometers. However, the University of Chile Geological Survey reported that the seism reached a magnitude of 5.9.

Thousands of inhabitants of Copiapó ran evacuation plans in offices and schools. The seism set off many alarms in cars and enterprises, according to radio stations. Parents went to take their children out of the schools. It was reported earlier that cornices fell down from buildings, businesses lost merchandise and cellphone networks encountered problems in the area.

The ONEMI reported no damages or injuries, but some roads collapsed. Power and water distribution were not affected. Eva Cansino, ONEMI boss, told TVN that the citizens’ reactions demonstrated particular sensitivity to seisms, and she pointed out that it helps to minimize the risks in similar situations. She added that this seism was not an aftershock of the February 27 Maule or March 11 Pichilemu earthquakes, which destroyed many places in the central and south areas of Chile.

Santiago felt the earthquake to a lesser degree. The earthquake was felt between the Antofagasta and O’Higgins regions.

ONEMI also reported the intensities of the seism in three regions according to the Mercalli scale:

Antofagasta: Taltal, III grades;
Atacama: Copiapó and Tierra Amarilla, VI grades; Vallenar, V grades; Caldera, IV grades;
Coquimbo: La Serena, V grades; Combarbalá and Río Hurtado, IV grades; Ovalle, III grades; and Punitaqui, II grades.

Hurricane Georges – Luquillo, Puerto Rico – Sep. 21, 1998

Hurricane Georges crossed the entire length of Puerto Rico on September 21, 1998. As the storm made landfall over the southeastern part of the island, I was able to intercept the northern eyewall in the town of Luquillo (the same location where I intercepted Hurricane Hugo nine years earlier). Although Georges had weakened significantly as it approached the Northeast Caribbean, the hurricane began to strengthen rapidly just before landfall in Puerto Rico. Georges was a Category Three with maximum sustained winds of 115mph and gusts between 130-140mph at landfall in Puerto Rico. Winds of 110mph with a peak gust of 130mph was recorded in Fajardo, very close to my location. The minimum central pressure at landfall in Puerto Rico was 968mb (28.59in).

Haiti earthquake damage assessed in Coast Guard flyover – Video January,13 2010

Januay 13,2010 :Wednesday at 4:17am a 3.9 magnitude earthquake shook the middle of the Swan Range in Montana. The closest town to the epicenter was Seeley Lake, which was situated 23 miles to the southwest.

It was felt as far away as St. Ignatius Montana, but most folks we spoke with in Seeley Lake slept through it. One resident felt and heard the whole thing. Donna Love said, “The noise was first like a log truck had pulled up to our house and muffled from inside. But it was very loud. And then our bed just gave a little bounce. Then the wall creaked up by the ceiling along with a scratchy noise. And then the log truck drove away.”

The magnitude measurement is not a linear scale, but an exponential one. To put it into perspective, the 7.0 earthquake in Haiti was almost 1,000 times stronger than the 3.9 quake near Seeley Lake.

Minor earthquakes like the one felt this morning happen often. According to Michigan Tech, it is estimated that 30,000 earthquakes of this magnitude happen worldwide each year.
