Hurricane Charley (and TS Bonnie)
http://www.hurricanetrack.com/posters/dvd2004.html
This is the second selection from our 2004 DVD “Tracking the Hurricanes: 2004″ that I have posted on YouTube. This video shows the extraordinary power of a category four hurricane: hurricane Charley. Our team first went down to Panama City Beach, FL for TS Bonnie and were ready a couple of days later for powerful hurricane Charley. The encounter was more than we could have ever expected and we were lucky to have come out with no damage or injuries. The bleeps you hear are exactly what you think they are- there was much cussing going on during the height of this harrowing experience.

Insuring against Famine – Ethiopia
Can commercial practices like risk management prevent famine? The new manager of the World Food Programme thinks so and is turning to business to revolutionise aid.
Before, the entire agency worked on a crisis happening, explains World Food Programme manager, Richard Wilcox. When disaster strikes, NGOs hawk round begging bowls. Only when funds are in can food be flown to the stricken areas. Its an expensive, inefficient way of operating. Wilcox wants to prevent humanitarian disasters striking in the first place. His latest idea is taking out weather insurance policies on behalf of Ethiopias subsistence farmers. In exchange for a premium paid by the WFP, insurance companies would pay out as soon as rains fail, not just when people start starving. Its hoped ideas like this will end the ad hoc nature of aid.

If a Tsunami hits Hawaii from the Chile earthquake, how bad could it be?
Chile is while away from Hawaii, so I’m thinking it won’t be bad, I’m concerned because some of my family is out there. The Chile earthquake is unverified at 8.3 – 8.8 on the Richter Scale, which is a huge magnitude!
Yea! when I called they said they were evacuating, So I am glad.
It could be bad. A friend of mine is on vacation there! Everyone is being evacuated to higher ground mountains…

In 2008 a team of scientists warned that a large earthquake could hit Haiti. Local geologist Carol Prentice, who was part of that team, discusses how they came to that conclusion and how the Bay Area could be next.
The aftermath of the earthquake in Haiti has been devastating. The Academy is part of San Franciscos Haiti Earthquake Relief program; we have a coin collecting machine on-site to collect donations to assist four different organizations.

100 percent Chance of an Earthquake Today
There’s a 100 percent chance of an earthquake today. Though millions of persons may never experience an earthquake, they are very common occurrences on this planet. So today — somewhere — an earthquake will occur.
It may be so light that only sensitive instruments will perceive its motion; it may shake houses, rattle windows, and displace small objects; or it may be sufficiently strong to cause property damage, death, and injury.
It is estimated that about 700 shocks each year have this capability when centered in a populated area. But fortunately, most of these potentially destructive earthquakes center in unpopulated areas far from civilization.
Since a major portion of the world’s earthquakes each year center around the rim of the Pacific Ocean (Ring of Fire), referred to by seismologists as the circum-Pacific belt, this is the most probable location for today’s earthquake. But it could hit any location, because no region is entirely free of earthquakes.
Stating that an earthquake is going to occur today is not really “predicting earthquakes”. To date, they cannot be predicted. But anyone, on any day, could make this statement and it would be true.
This is because several million earthquakes occur annually; thereby, thousands occur each day, although most are too small to be located. The problem, however, is in pinpointing the area where a strong shock will center and when it will occur.
Earthquake prediction is a future possibility, though. Just as the Weather Bureau now predicts hurricanes, tornadoes, and other severe storms, the NEIC may one day issue forecasts on earthquakes.
Earthquake research was stepped up after the Alaska shock in 1964. Today, research is being conducted by the USGS and other federal and state agencies, as well as universities and private institutions. Earthquake prediction may some day become a reality, but only after much more is learned about the earthquake mechanism.

ADMS-COMMAND: Advanced Disaster Management Simulator
First responders arriving on the scene of an emergency make decisions that save lives. Proper training of these emergency workers is critical in limiting the loss of life, mitigating damage, and assuring the safety of the public.
Live training is essential but expensive, time and resource consuming and the types of incidents that can be exercised are limited due to environmental and safety restrictions.
Simulation is a proven methodology to meet live training experience and go beyond.
ADMS-COMMAND, the next-generation Advanced Disaster Management Simulator, is a comprehensive interactive training simulator for all-hazards preparedness, providing authentic training situations, affordably, safely, and with no environmental impact.
ADMS-COMMAND is the optimal solution for training individuals and teams at all levels and disciplines, from on-scene Incident Commanders to Emergency Operation Center personnel. Objectives trained, include: Command and Control, Coordination and Communication, Planning and Resource Management.
ADMS offers realistic environments into which participants get so immersed, that they demonstrate realistic behavior. To accomplish this, ADMS-COMMAND combines high-fidelity three-dimensional visuals and sound, a sophisticated physics engine and embedded artificial intelligence, resulting in open-ended learning situations based on real-world conditions. Trainees’ commands drive the escalation or resolution of the situation.
To further engage participants, additional simulator elements like immersive visual displays, vehicle controls and cabs can be integrated into the system. With ADMS, users can grow from a single station system to a complete, high-end multi-player team training center.
ADMS-COMMAND offers a powerful learning environment and is able to present a wide variety of incident scenario types such as: building fires, industrial and transportation incidents, hazardous material releases, terrorist incidents, diseases, civil disturbances, wildland fires and other natural and manmade disasters. Beyond training, the system is also valuable for officer assessment, research, and testing emergency response plans. (Text: Training, Assessment, Research, & Testing) ADMS-COMMAND fosters a depth of knowledge, skills, and experience to help develop well-rounded and confident responders.
ADMS-COMMAND includes virtual vehicles and crews that operate exactly as real world resources. On trainee’s command, virtual crews can execute real-time actions like search and rescue, investigation, fire fighting, HAZMAT response, evacuation, and casualty triage and treatment.
Like in the real world, as an ADMS simulation evolves, trainees observe the situation and make decisions. The outcomes of these decisions drive the actions, which either escalate or mitigate the situation.
ADMS-COMMAND comes with a comprehensive Trainer Toolset. Training staff can create new scenarios with the Scenario Generator and have full control over the exercises with scenario changes and on-the-fly injects. The type and degree of the incident, the location, types and quantities of initial injuries, available resources, and even the weather can all be adjusted to keep the training fresh and challenging.
After-action review tools allow instructors to replay entire incidents which are viewable from any perspective, allowing for complete situational awareness. The scoring system is structured, objective and adheres to national and local protocol. Individual decisions can be assessed and discussed supported by time-stamped action lists and recorded radio messages.
Since 1995 ADMS-COMMAND has been used worldwide at major emergency response and disaster management training institutions to enhance training quality.
Some of the organizations using the system include New York City’s Office of Emergency Management, the UK’s International Fire Training Centre, the Netherlands Institute for Safety, and the South-Korean National Fire Service Academy.
ADMS-COMMAND is available as turn-key installed systems, portable kits, or through on-site Training Support Services.
ADMS-COMMAND is an industry-proven solution for optimal all-hazards emergency preparedness. Training with ADMS helps minimize disaster’s impact, and ultimately, save lives.
