Compare and contrast the similarities and differences between the earthquakes in Chile and Haiti.?
The difference is how prepared the two countries were to handle a disaster.
Chile’s entire infrastructure was better prepared. The buildings, roads, bridges, power grid, water grid, fire departments, hospitals, police…..everything. Chile also had more of a plan, for what to do in the event of an emergency. They were able to at least, do something.
In Haiti, nothing was built to any kind of code, and a lot of things were falling apart anyway. The earthquake completely destroyed everything. The people no longer had water, power, shelter or food, and they had no way to get any of that. No factories could run, no businesses could operate, no supplies could get in or out, or move around within the country. Everyone was struggling with their most fundamental need, the need to survive, and a lot of them were loosing. Most of the people also needed medical attention, and they had no way of getting it. They were completely helpless and homeless, all of them.
So if you’re building a house, and you’re fed up with all those county regulations, state and federal codes. Just remember, pain in the ass as in may be, there’s a reason for all that regulation. Look at Haiti, that’s the reason.

Chaos in Haiti as huge earthquake hits island
Hundreds are feared dead in Haiti after the strongest earthquake to hit the country in over two hundred years.
The island, considered the poorest country in the Western hemisphere, is said to be suffering ‘a catastrophe of major proportions.’ Tens of thousands of people are now homeless after 7.0 magnitude quake and the Presidential Palace and the UN headquarters are in ruins. There’s been a united plea for international aid and hundreds or even thousands are estimated to have died in the tragedy.

Were any of your relatives affected by the Chile Earthquake?
I have some relatives in Chile and Argentina, but luckily most of them were off vacationing in Australia. The two uncles I have in Chile were in Santiago so they were farther from the epicenter, and they were fine, they just lost power.
Do you have any relatives in Chile and any of the areas affected by the quake and/or tsunami? Are they alright?
I hope all of you are doing okay — and if not, then my deepest sympathy goes out to you…
None of mine, they live in Alaska or Mexico and were not affected

Why did so many die in the Haiti earthquake but relatively few in the Loma Prieta (San Francisco)?
I understand why so many people die in the Haiti earthquake but why were they so many few deaths compared to Haiti in the Loma Prieta earthquake which also was a similar magnitude (6.9)? What made the Loma Prieta earthquake kill only around 100 people? Was it the buildings, roads, speed of rescue? Any answers would be great.
Thank you very much, building standards. Great, thank you. More answers are welcome, the more the better.
Lack of infrastructure and poor building codes are what killed all those people in Haiti. California has some of the most stringent building codes in the world, this is to save as many lives as possible because it is in an earthquake prone are. Also California has an excellent infrastructure in place to deal with natural disasters. As soon as something goes wrong, emergency crews are in place doing what needs to be done. Haiti with it’s poor and corrupt government is not capable of doing that. Also, Haiti hasn’t had a major earthquake in almost 200 years (before the recent one of course) So Haitians do not know what do when an earthquake strike. Californians are taught in school what to do when an earthquake strikes, and many Californians have lived through a major quake and have personal experience dealing with them.

The Code of conduct
Code of Conduct for The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and NGOs in Disaster Relief.
The Code of Conduct for The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and NGOs in Disaster Relief, was developed and agreed upon by eight of the world’s largest disaster response agencies in the summer of 1994 and represents a huge leap forward in setting standards for disaster response. It is being used by the International Federation to monitor its own standards of relief delivery and to encourage other agencies to set similar standards.
