Pure Hope: HODR 2008 Year in Photos – Hands On Disaster Response

Click “Watch in HD” for best quality image.

2008 was a very busy year for Hands On Disaster Response.

The year began with two projects already underway: our earthquake response project in Peru was winding down and our cyclone response project in Bangladesh was just beginning.

In the spring we answered the call to help Gassville, Arkansas and Newton County, Missouri after destructive tornados and in June, when massive flooding struck Cedar Rapids, Iowa, we launched a four-month response through which more than 2000 volunteers jumped in and lent a hand.

In August and September Haiti was pummeled by four tropical storms and hurricanes that devastated an already struggling nation. Our hurricane response, that started in November and continues into 2009, is helping people dig out and rise up.

Whether it was removing rubble in Peru, building a home in Bangladesh, or gutting out a house in Iowa, HODR was there helping families around the world rebuild their lives.

Haiti warns of political violence

Jean-Max Bellerive, Haiti’s prime minister, says his government is in danger of collapsing, as gangs and political opponents capitalise on its inability to deal with the aftermath of the January 12 earthquake.

His comments come amid concern that armed gangs could try to take advantage of the situation to re-take control of areas now patrolled by UN peacekeepers.

But the presence of foreign soldiers is seen as an insult to many who remain deeply loyal to Jean-Bertrand Aristide, Haiti’s former president, whose second term ended when he was ousted in a coup in 2004.

Al Jazeera’s Sebastian Walker reports from the capital, Port-au-Prince, where he met one of Aristide’s supporters who says he is ready to use weapons to bring back the former president. 20 Feb 10

What do you think 600 "Disaster Relief Centers" that are being built in America could be for?

Hmm..Another "terrorist" attack? A Katrina-like disaster? In my opinion…its for the next self-inflicted wound commited by our government to be blamed on terrorists…but what do YOU think?

http://www.prisonplanet.com/articles/march2008/020308Prison.htm

Prison’s for your families. How does that sound? atleast they won’t split you up before they shoot you down.

thats nice
they are now calling re-education camps disaster relief centers
if you are an outspoken conservative, you can expect to spend some time in one of these camps after hitlery gets elected
I just wonder when they are gonna install the ovens

Do all hurricanes start off the coast of africa?

Please help solve a dispute. My mother says ALL hurricanes start off the coast of africa and I say some can start in the Caribbean. Please settle this for us!!!

In tropical forecasting class I was taught that although they might form anywhere in the Atlantic or Caribbean Basin, their genesis are in the tropical waves that form on the lee side of coastal African mountain ranges.

As the trade winds blow over these mountains, at a near perpendicular angle, an effect called "lee side troughing" takes place…. low pressure forms on the lee side of the mountains. This is also called Bernoulli’s principle.

Sometimes it’s not an actual closed off low pressure system that forms. Rather, it looks more like a wave shape in the trade winds as it travels across the Atlantic. At times there’s weather associated with these waves and at other times there’s no weather.

We were taught that if, and when, the conditions are right…(warm water, surface convergence, upper level divergence and weak vertical wind shear) these waves can develop into tropical storm systems. If the conditions are not right they don’t develop.

Was the recent Haiti earthquakes a "blessing in disguise"?

Not trying to be rude, but I feel like Haiti was a ridiculously poor country to begin with. No one really cared about what was going over there until this huge earthquake came and killed a good bit of people. That’s sad and all, but it seems like Haiti might be getting a lot of support and doesn’t think kind of sound like the best thing that could have happened to Haiti? Minus the possible hundreds of people that are dead? I also hear that children who are found are almost immediately being shipped to France to be adopted. That seems like a pretty good deal to me, but is there any reason to think differently?

P.S. I donated, I was just wondering.
Just to be clear for those of you who think I am disregarding this tragedy, by asking is this a "blessing in disguise" I do mean is this making something amazing happen from something that wasn’t so great to begin with. I wouldn’t be happy if my family died and I didn’t have anything, but if I was a child who didn’t have anything and a nice French family adopted me, that’s a plus. Or if I was growing up in slum to begin with, an earthquake came, and afterwards people where trying to make a safe place for me to sleep and food for me to eat, that’s a trade off. It seems like God works in mysterious ways to me.

No. Hypothetically granting 200,000 dead people are acceptable…

I will be stunned speechless if Haiti gets "fixed" after this. Already people are yawning and annoyed at continuing news coverage. You are wrong — aid organizations have been trying to restructure the country for years. We had been meddling for decades.
