5.3 magnitude earthquake rattles New Zealand North Island

September 2nd, 2010 by admin · No Comments

New Zealand, Indonesia, and Chile shaken by earthquakes. Early on Monday, July 12, the Hawke’s Bay region on the east coast of North Island, New Zealand was rattled by a 5.3-magnitude temblor with tremors that were widely felt around Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay. Later that day, Indonesia’s Lampung province in South Sumatra was struck by a magnitude-5.3 quake, which was soon followed by another of the same magnitude in North Maluku province. In addition, West Nusa Tenggara province was hit by a 5.1-magnitude temblor, 63 kilometers southeast of Raba. On Wednesday morning in the Latin American country of Chile, a strong magnitude-6.5 earthquake occurred 55 kilometers southeast of Lebu in the Bío-Bío region. Fortunately, none of these events caused significant damage or casualties.

As we thank the Providence for the quake-stricken people’s safety, we pray that such disturbing events may soon be a thing of the past with our gentler ways that help stabilize the ecosphere.

Magnitude 5 earthquake jolts N Sumatra

August 30th, 2010 by admin · No Comments

Earthquakes shake Indonesia, Solomon Islands, Formosa (Taiwan), and Chile.
On Saturday morning, June 26, Indonesia’s North Sumatra province was struck by a 5.0 temblor located 129 kilometers southwest of Padang Sidempuan city. Later that afternoon, the nation’s Java Island was jolted by a strong 6.3-magnitude quake that shook buildings in the capital Jakarta as hit 118 kilometers southwest of Tasikmalaya. Also on Saturday, a powerful 6.9-magnitude quake occurred 35 kilometers southwest of Kira Kira off the Solomon Islands, sparking panic among residents as tremors were felt as far away as the capital Honiara, sending people fleeing into the streets. Meanwhile, Chile’s Tarapacá region experienced a magnitude-5.6 temblor 127 kilometers southeast of Arica, while in Formosa (Taiwan) on Sunday, a 5.2 magnitude tremor rattled Yilan County. Fortunately, none of the events resulted in any casualties or significant damage, and no tsunami warnings were reported.

We are thankful to know of the safety of all residents in the quake-stricken regions as we pray for the cessation of such distressing events through our more considerate stewardship of the environment.

Chile EQ Video

August 30th, 2010 by admin · No Comments

The magnitude 8.8 Chilean earthquake of February 27, 2010 is one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded. This earthquake occurred in a very seismically active region off the coast of central Chile. Hundreds of thousands of lives were impacted by the event and the accompanying tsunami caused more widespread damage than the earthquake. Although many cities in Chile suffered severe damage, the existence of modern building codes resulted in the limited loss of life and property. Many lessons can be learned from the recent events in Chile.

Hurricane Danielle 2010

August 30th, 2010 by admin · 11 Comments

http://www.mahalo.com/hurricane-danielle-2010

Hurricane Danielle has formed in the far Atlantic, becoming the second hurricane of the 2010 Atlantic hurricane season. On the morning of August 23, 2010, Tropical Storm Danielle was centered about 2700 miles southeast of Miami, Florida. The storm was packing sustained 65 mile per hour winds and later in the day turned into a hurricane with top sustained winds at 75 miles per hour, which forecasters expect to strengthen over the next few days.

Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center said Hurricane Danielle was moving west-northwest at about 16 miles per hour on the morning of August 23. Where will the Hurricane wind up? It’s too early to tell. Hurricane Center meteorologists were predicting that Danielle could increase in forward speed “over the next day or so” and “should make a turn toward the northwest by Wednesday,” August 25, 2010.

Hurricane Danielle is the second of this year’s Atlantic hurricane season, which officially began on June 1, 2010. Experts have predicted that this year’s season will be an active one, with up to 20 named Atlantic storms. Between eight and 12 could become Hurricanes. To date, only Tropical Storm Alex, the first named storm of the season, went on to become a hurricane.

Are the tropics beginning to heat up? Some experts say “yes.” Meteorologist Rick Knabb of the Weather Channel says “There are signs that the Atlantic is acting like it should in August and September.” Knabb says “We’re seeing more activity than we did earlier in the season.”

AccuWeather hurricane expert Joe Bastardi says Hurricane Danielle could mark the opening of the floodgates. Bastardi is calling for “an upcoming frenzy of storms, days with two or three storms on the chart.”
